This is the story of Reena Kumari (fictional)—a young mother who lost her husband at 18, faced violence, and still refused to break for the sake of her child
Harijan Tola, Kishanganj block, Kishanganj district—this is where Reena Kumari (fictional) lives. Her life is not an ordinary story. It is one of those stories that are rarely told, only lived. She was married at a very young age, at a time when a girl usually begins to understand her dreams. Instead, she learned to live with decisions made by others. Soon after, she became a mother. Responsibilities kept increasing, but she still had one support in her life.
Then one day came that took everything away. Her husband passed away. It was not just the loss of a person—it was the loss of the only support she had. After that day, the house remained the same, but everything else changed. The behavior of the people around her slowly started to shift. Where she should have received support, she instead faced taunts, humiliation, and pressure. Living in her in-laws’ house became increasingly difficult. On one side was the responsibility of her small child, and on the other was her own insecurity. All of this was slowly breaking her from within.
There were many nights when she could not sleep. Holding her child close, she would just keep thinking about what would happen next. At the age of 18, facing all this was not easy. Many times, she felt like giving up, but her child became the reason she held on. Gradually, she realized that if she remained silent, nothing would ever change.
With this thought, one day she gathered the courage to step out and seek help. That moment became the beginning of a slow but important change in her life. Her situation reached Janta Express Welfare Foundation. For the first time, someone listened to her completely—without interrupting, without judging. After this, conversations began with her family. It was not easy. Many times, discussions failed, many times efforts seemed ineffective, but the process continued. They spoke about legal rights, about dignity, and slowly the situation began to shift.
After some time, she received what was rightfully hers. Her belongings were returned, and she was moved to a safe place—her parents’ home. But the real struggle began from there. She now had safety, but no income. She had a small child, and the full responsibility of survival was on her shoulders. Starting over was not easy.
At this point, Janta Express Welfare Foundation did not step away. She was given sewing training. In the beginning, everything felt difficult—handling the machine, learning the work, staying consistent—but she did not give up. Slowly, she learned. Along with this, she was made aware of her rights, her independence, and her ability to make her own decisions. She was connected with government schemes, which helped her buy a sewing machine and gradually start her work.
Today, Reena Kumari (fictional) stands on her own feet. She earns through sewing and is raising her child with dignity. There is no fear on her face now—only a quiet strength. She speaks openly and confidently. Her life is no longer what it used to be.
This story is being written not just to tell what happened, but to show what is possible. It is not just the story of one woman. It is the story of courage that does not end, even after pain. It is the story of change that may come slowly, but when it comes, it transforms everything.
