A timely intervention by Janta Express Welfare Foundation saved a child’s childhood; a small message on Facebook stopped the marriage of a 12-year-old girl and changed the course of her entire life.
In a small village in the Belwa area of Kishanganj district, everything appeared normal on the surface, but inside one house, preparations were quietly underway that were about to change a young girl’s life forever. A 12-year-old girl, whom we will refer to here as Afreen Khatoon, had her marriage fixed. Her family considered it their responsibility to carry it out, without realizing that at an age when she should have been going to school, she was being pushed into marriage.
Afreen herself did not understand what was happening to her. She was only told that she would be married and would have to go to a new home. What marriage actually means, what responsibilities come with it, and how it would impact her life—she had no understanding of any of this. There were no clear dreams in her eyes, only an unspoken fear that even she could not fully comprehend.
Meanwhile, a concerned individual sent information about the situation through Facebook Messenger. It was a simple message, but it carried within it a call to save a child’s life. As soon as the information was received, the team of Janta Express Welfare Foundation took immediate action without any delay. Given the seriousness of the matter, the local police station and officials related to the prohibition of child marriage were informed first, ensuring that the entire process would proceed within the legal framework.
Soon, a joint team comprising the administration, police, and the organization was formed and reached the location. Initially, there was an attempt to present everything as normal, but as the team began interacting, the reality gradually came to light. When Afreen was asked whether she understood anything about marriage, she simply shook her head innocently. Her response deeply moved everyone present, as it became clear that she had no idea what such a major decision meant for her life.
The team then began speaking with the family. It was not easy at first. The family stood firm on their decision, repeatedly citing social pressure, traditions, and their own circumstances. However, the team remained patient. They explained step by step that child marriage is illegal, that it has serious consequences, and that it negatively affects a child’s health, education, and entire future. The discussion was not limited to legal aspects; they were also made to understand that this one decision could push their daughter’s entire life into darkness.
After continuous dialogue and counseling for a long time, the atmosphere slowly began to change. The rigidity on the family’s faces turned into concern and understanding. Finally, the moment came when the family themselves agreed that they would not proceed with the marriage. This was not just a decision; it was a transformation in thinking, a courage they showed for the sake of their daughter.
Following this, all legal procedures were properly completed to ensure that such a situation would not arise again. The administration issued clear instructions, and the entire matter was documented. It was ensured that the child remained safe and that her education continued.
Today, Afreen Khatoon is safe and has returned to school. She now holds books in her hands, and there is a new sense of confidence on her face. She thinks about her future, understands her dreams, and is moving forward to achieve them. The life that was about to be taken away from her has now found a new beginning.
The family, too, has changed. They now value their daughter’s education and are making efforts to support her growth. They have realized that the right decision at the right time becomes the greatest support.
This entire incident shows that if the right steps are taken at the right time, even a small piece of information can change someone’s entire life. One message, one effort, and a determined intervention saved a child’s childhood and gave her a new future.
